This glossary can help you to prepare for the IELTS Task 1 test on the chart showing the reasons of men and women chose to work from home.
approximately
adverb
Used to show that something is almost, but not completely, accurate or exact.
Example: Approximately a quarter of males put productivity as a reason.
childcare
Noun
The care of children, especially by a crèche, nursery, or childminder while parents are working.
Example: For childcare, the pattern was different again with almost a quarter of females giving this reason compared to very few males.
choose
verb
Pick out (someone or something) as being the best or most appropriate of two or more alternatives.
Example: The bar chart illustrates the reasons men and women chose to work from home in 2019.
examine
Verb
Inspect (someone or something) thoroughly in order to determine their nature or condition.
Example: This pattern is reversed when examining the under ten hours category with almost three quarters of females working this amount compared to only 3% of males.
longer hours
Noun phrase
More hours. A period of time doing something, especially work, that is longer than is usual or customary.
Example: In general, men work longer hours from home.
majority
Noun
The greater number.
Example: The vast majority of males worked over 30 hours per week.
marked differences.
Noun phrase.
A marked change or difference in behaviour or in a situation is very obvious or noticeable.
Example: The 10 to 30 hours per week category shows fewer marked differences.
money
Noun
A current medium of exchange in the form of coins and banknotes; coins and banknotes collectively.
Example: Saving money was the main reason for both males and females.
productivity
Noun
The effectiveness of productive effort, especially in industry, as measured in terms of the rate of output per unit of input.
Example: Approximately a quarter of males put productivity as a reason, which was twice as high as the female response.
respectively
adverb
Separately or individually and in the order already mentioned.
Example: Saving money was the main reason for both males and females (45% and 42% respectively).
reverse
verb
Make (something) the opposite of what it was.
Example: This pattern is reversed when examining the under ten hours category with almost three quarters of females working this amount compared to only 3% of males.
vast
Adjective
Of very great extent or quantity; immense.
Example: The vast majority of males worked over 30 hours per week.
work from home
Noun phrase
Work from home describes work being done remotely, instead of at an office. It rather refers to an office at home.
Example: The bar chart illustrates the reasons men and women chose to work from home.
